Electric Vehicles Grow 112% In Mumbai Alone

Electric vehicles (EV) are experiencing a surge in demand in Mumbai and Maharashtra. The state experienced a 153% increase in new e-vehicle registrations in the first nine months of the fiscal year 2021-2022, while the city saw a 112% elevation in the same time, according to the most recent transportation statistics.

From April 1 to December 27 in FY2021-22, the number of registered e-vehicles grew from 9,415 in 2020-21 to 23,786 in just nine months. Furthermore, authorities reported 57,386 total e-vehicles registered in Maharashtra so far; it may surpass a lakh in a few months.

From 48 new e-vehicles registered in 2017-18 in Mumbai, the number increased to 132 in 2018-19, 642 in 2019-20, and 1,442 in 2020-21.

Registrations of new e-cars/e-two-wheelers more than doubled in the city in the nine months of 2021-22, totalling 3,059, taking the total EV count to 6,000. Tardeo has the highest number of EV registrations, 1,920 e-cars/scooters, on the island city.

Among the new registrations were cars and SUVs with a high range of 300 km on a single (full) charge, which was sufficient for both intra-city and intercity travel. Over a hundred housing societies in Mumbai now have e-charging stations with a subsidized price of Rs 5.50 per unit, which is cheaper than residential power prices.

Pranav Naik, a transportation specialist, said that the government must consider the system’s long-term viability by guaranteeing that power is generated mostly from renewable sources rather than combustion fuel. They should also improve public transportation so that more people may ride in pooled e-vehicles.

Gaurang Vora, a city transport campaigner, hailed the rise of e-vehicles, claiming that e-scooters and e-cars with green licence plates were visible on the road. The government should encourage the use of EVs by offering incentives for their purchase. It will significantly cut pollution.

According to a government official, 1,500 additional EV charging stations are being planned for the Mumbai region. He also stated that the government intends to ensure that 10% of new automobile registrations are EVs by 2025.
